Ensure the Fossil Free Ireland pledge is included in the next Programme for Government

Petition to the Irish Government: Commitments for a Fossil-Free Ireland

We, the undersigned, call on candidates and parties to commit to an urgent fossil-free transition by including the following commitments  in the programme for government:

  1. Endorse the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty – Join the growing number of nation states seeking a negotiating mandate, and advocate for Ireland to become a global leader in promoting its adoption. This proposed treaty aims to halt the expansion of fossil fuel production, phase out existing production in line with limiting global warming to 1.5°C, and encompass a just transition, ensuring no state, community or worker is left behind.

  2. Ban LNG Infrastructure – Prevent the development of Liquified Natural Gas terminals and related infrastructure.

  3. No New Fossil Fuel Infrastructure – Oppose all new fossil fuel projects and permits in Ireland or its surrounding waters.

  4. Set a Phase-Out Date for Oil and Gas – Create a clear, legally binding timeline for the end of fossil fuel production and consumption.

  5. Accelerate the Transition to Renewable Energy – Commit to scaling up wind, solar, and energy storage, making renewables accessible for all.

  6. Ensure a Just Transition for Workers and Communities – Support workers and communities affected by the fossil fuel phase-out through a statutory Just Transition Commission.

  7. Commit to Fair Climate Finance – Fulfil Ireland’s responsibility to support global climate finance, following principles of equity and the polluter pays principle.

  8. Ensure Public Participation in Decision-Making – Engage citizens, experts, and civil society in a transparent policy-making process for climate action.

  9. Amend the Fossil Fuel Divestment Act – Strengthen this Act to ensure Ireland’s investments are truly fossil-free and do not support harmful industries.

By signing this petition, we call on you to protect our climate, communities, and future generations. Together, let’s build a fossil-free Ireland and a resilient, sustainable future.

Why does it matter?

The climate crisis is here and its impacts are intensifying worldwide. Fossil fuels are the primary drivers of climate change, responsible for 86% of CO₂ emissions in the last decade alone. Without urgent action, we are on track for a global temperature rise of 3.1°C—a future that would lead to unprecedented and devastating consequences.

In Ireland, we are already seeing the effects of climate disruption. Recent flash floods have inflicted millions of euros in damage, leaving hundreds of homeowners and business owners in Cork uninsured and afraid of the Winter to come. Agriculture, too, has been hit hard, with crop losses from extreme weather, flooding, and waterlogged soils impacting farmers’ livelihoods. Beyond Ireland, climate-driven disasters in cities like Valencia continue to highlight the urgency of action.

The crisis goes beyond environmental impact. Ireland’s reliance on fossil fuel imports has left us vulnerable to global conflicts and price shocks, like those sparked by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. True energy security lies in domestically generated  renewable energy.  Ireland is legally bound to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050 and to cut emissions by 51% by 2030. Without a commitment to phasing out fossil fuels, we risk not only environmental devastation but also severe financial penalties of up to €8bn for exceeding our carbon budget.
