FOSSIL-FUEL FREE
IRELAND PLEDGE

Fossil Fuels are the root cause of the climate crisis. In the last decade alone they have been responsible for 86% of Co2 emissions. Scientists estimate we are currently on track for a possible 3.1°C increase in global temperatures. We are currently at about a 1.3°C increase in warming - which is having devastating effects on our planet. In Valencia, Spain over 200 people have lost their lives to extreme flash flooding, with more still missing. In Chiva, 343mm (13.5 inches) of rain was recorded over the span of four hours. The average ANNUAL precipitation for the entire region is less than 454 mm. The climate crisis is now.

Flash flooding in Cork last year saw millions of euro worth of damage in Midleton. Hundreds of homes, businesses, GAA clubs, community hospitals & schools were devastatingly affected. Many businesses have been forced to close their doors permanently. Over 100,000 homeowners have been refused full home & business insurance coverage due to increased risk of flooding. Farmers in Ireland have also experienced huge loss of crops and productivity due to flooding and waterlogged soils during 2023 and 2024.

Cork City Council, 2023

Fossil fuels are a finite resource and have long driven conflicts and supply issues. Russia's invasion of Ukraine exposed Ireland's heavy reliance on fossil fuel imports, leaving it vulnerable to global shocks. True energy security lies in domestically generated renewable energy. Ireland is legally binded to net-Zero emissions by no later than 2050, and to a 51% reduction in emissions by the end of this decade. This can only be achieved through fossil fuel phase out. By not reducing its emissions, Ireland risks ‘compliance costs’ of €8bn for exceeding its carbon budget.

To limit global warming to 1.5°C we must incorporate a fast and fair phase out of fossil fuels. In line with historical responsibility, rich countries in the Global North need to act first and fastest. In Ireland, that means expanding renewable energy development, not investing in any new Fossil Fuel infrastructure such as Liquified Natural Gas (LNG) terminals, setting a phase out date for oil and gas and encompassing a just transition. Making sure that no individual, community, town or city is left behind.

Will you take the pledge & join us in securing a safer, more sustainable future for us all?

As a candidate/party standing for election in Ireland, I/we hereby pledge to prioritise the protection of our climate, communities, and future generations by committing to the following actions if elected:

  1. Endorsement of the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty*
I/we pledge to endorse the development of a Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty by joining the growing number of nation states seeking a negotiating mandate, and advocate for Ireland to become a global leader in promoting its adoption. This proposed treaty aims to halt the expansion of fossil fuel production, phase out existing production in line with limiting global warming to 1.5°C, and fast-track a just transition to renewable energy for workers and communities.

  2. Ban on LNG Infrastructure
I/we commit to introducing legislation to ensure that no Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) import terminals, processing facilities, or associated infrastructure will be developed or permitted. This includes state-led facilities. LNG is not a solution to our energy needs and poses significant risks to our climate, local communities, and energy security.
I/we commit to removing Action 17 from the Energy Security Package.

  3. No New Fossil Fuel Infrastructure
I/we pledge to oppose the construction of any new fossil fuel infrastructure in Ireland, or surrounding waters. This commitment extends to preventing the approval of any new permits or licences for fossil fuel projects.

  4. Setting a Phase-Out Date for Oil and Gas
I/we will work to establish a clear and legally binding timeline for the phase-out of oil and gas production and consumption in Ireland, aligned with Ireland’s climate obligations and the Paris Agreement.

  5. Accelerating the Transition to Renewable Energy
I/we will support policies and investments that rapidly scale up renewable energy infrastructure, such as wind, solar, and energy storage, to ensure that Ireland can meet its energy needs sustainably. This will include measures to make renewable energy more accessible to households, businesses, and communities.

  6. Ensuring a Just Transition for Workers and Communities
I/we commit to implementing a Just Transition strategy that provides comprehensive support for workers and communities affected by the transition away from fossil fuels, including by putting the Just Transition Commission on a statutory footing. This must also involve creating new green jobs, reskilling programs, and community-led renewable energy initiatives to ensure that no one is left behind.

  7. Commitment to Fair Climate Finance in line with Historical Responsibility
I/we commit to deliver on Ireland's fair share of international climate finance, in addition to funding Official Development Assistance. This will include mobilisation of new and innovative sources of public climate finance based on polluter pays principles and social equity principles.

  8. Commitment to Public Participation in Decision-Making
I/we will actively engage with the public, civil society organisations, and experts to ensure that policies related to climate action and energy transition are developed through a transparent and participatory process.

  9. Amend the Fossil Fuel Divestment Act
I/we will fulfil the government commitment to amend the Fossil Fuel Divestment Act to ensure it is fully fossil free and does not support harmful agribusiness.

By signing this pledge, I/we commit to taking immediate and decisive action to address the climate crisis, protect the health and well-being of our communities, and ensure a sustainable future for Ireland.

Together, we can make Ireland a global leader in the transition to a fossil-free future.
